The cockatiel, also known as the weero/weoro or quarrion, is native to Australia, and is a great choice for intermediate bird owners. On average these birds live between 15-20 years and enjoy interacting with humans, allowing for years of fun and joy with these amazing birds.

Housing:

  • Choose an enclosure a minimum of 20 x 20 x 30 inches. Increase size if you will be keeping more than one.
  • Birds are sensitive to strong smells, smoke and drafts. Keep habitat away from the kitchen,non-stick cookware, windows and direct sunlight. Cover at night.
  • Include at least 2 perches of different heights, thickness and texture to keep your cockatiel’s feet healthy.
  • Don’t put a perch directly above the bird’s food or water bowl; droppings will likely land there.
  • Layer the bottom of the habitat with an appropriate liner and replace as needed.
  • Keep your cockatiel happy with two to three toys, including puzzles that hide treats. 2-3 times a week, give your pet a shallow bowl of warm water for a bath or mist them with warm water.

75% SEED-PELLET BLEND: Refresh daily and always keep 3/4 full. If you choose to make your own blend, mix approximately 75% pellet and 25% seed.

20% FRESH FOODS Dark leafy greens, vegetables, fresh fruits and whole grains served every other day.

5% TREATS: Honey sticks and millet spray make tasty treats. Offer them once a month WATER Replenish your bird’s bottle or bowl with fresh, clean water every day.

When Should I Contact a Veterinarian>
In addition to regularly scheduled appointments, contact your avian veterinarian if you notice the following signs:

  • Sitting at the bottom of the enclosure
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Less activity and preening
  • Feathers fluffed for long periods of time
  • Sneezing; discharge from eyes, nose or mouth
  • Runny droppings for more than two days
  • onstantly plucking feathers or feathers are falling out.
